Sometimes in business things happen that are beyond your control and you learn to pivot and sometimes things happen because you messed up and then you have to spend time fixing your own mess. Well, True North Beauty is getting a new website because of the latter.
Last fall I was all set to roll out several new programs for TNB. All of the new programs required adding new software to our website in order for them to work. I got all the software needed and was ready to install them, but it wouldn’t upload. I did some research and found out that the version of my website was too old to accommodate the new program software! My first thought was “Oh well, I'll just install the website updates like I do on my phone and I can upload them after that.”
Wow, was I wrong.
After hours of trying to install the updates and time on the phone with technical support, I learned that there were regular updates that I was supposed to keep up with (like with our phones) in order to keep my website functional. Because it had been so long since I made ANY updates, my website would have to be rebuilt from scratch before I could add anything new to the site! This news hit me hard. I couldn’t move my business forward because I ignored accepting the updates to my website and that was all on me.
Of course this was all happening right around Christmas time and I knew that I would not be able to make changes right away and I could not justify the cost of outsourcing it. So I had to hold off on implementing the new programs and wait to work on it after the holiday season. I can’t tell you how frustrating it was to know that this could have been prevented if I had just taken a little bit of time to keep up with the updates. Even thought I knew it was my responsibility, I was still upset with myself for giving myself this lemon of a problem.
Come January, I had the time to focus and build a new website. So I rolled up my sleeves and decided I was going to turn this into a learning experience and create a beautiful new site. Since I am not a computer wiz, I watched a ton of YouTube videos and studied up on how to do the technical things and guess what? I did it! It took a lot of trial and error but I am putting the finishing touches on it and will launch it within the next week! I am so proud of how it looks now and I can honestly say that this experience truly taught me how to turn lemons in to lemonade. (It has also taught me not to ignore the automatic update messages you get so I never make this mistake again!)
