To me, fall is one of the best seasons to get out and be active. The weather is cooling off so it isn’t too hot, too cold, or too muddy to enjoy a hike or a nice walk/run outdoors; and there are so many benefits to working out and being active! But the challenge for most people is to get the motivation to get up and do it. That’s why I think fall is the perfect time to get motivated to get outside; the leaves are changing colors, hiking trails aren’t as packed, and the weather is perfect.
There are also incredible benefits to working out as well, besides losing weight and getting fit. Some of those benefits include, reduced blood pressure, relieving stress, increase energy levels, improves brain function and memory, helps build muscle, and reduce your risk of getting a chronic disease. However, one of the amazing benefits of exercising that most people are not aware of is that it can improve your skin’s overall health!
Here’s how:
-Exercise increases blood flow and that is vital to your skins’ health since blood carries oxygen and nutrients to your hard working cells in your body, including your skin. Your blood also helps carry away free radicals and waste from your cells to ‘cleanse’ your skin from the inside. This oxygenated blood is also what gives you that youthful “glow” after working out! That’s why it is also important to have a solid skincare routine, so you can cleanse your skin from the outside too! We recommend using our True North Beauty Face Polish and Oil Cleanser.
-Exercise releases endorphins (the feel good hormone) and that helps to relieve stress. Stress causes higher levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and high levels of cortisol mean higher levels of hormonal acne. So to help combat that stress hormone and acne, get a vigorous workout in – like boxing or weight lifting, to raise those endorphins and have your mind and skin feel clearer!
-Exercise stimulates the production of collagen, the main structural protein in your skin. Collagen is what makes your skin firm and supple and helps keep its elasticity.
-Exercise makes you sweat! Sweat is actually good for your skin because it helps purge your skin of bacteria, dirt, and oils. Sweat also contains water, minerals, and salts that help to naturally exfoliate your skin as your body expels them. Just make sure you drink plenty of water or have a sports drink to help replenish the salts and minerals your body is losing and to rehydrate to reduce your skin’s pH imbalance. But most importantly, make sure to wipe down or shower after a major sweat session. Since your body is getting rid of impurities by sweating, you don’t want your skin to reabsorb them by letting the sweat dry on you. A good way to help combat this if you can’t fully shower right after a workout is to actually wash your face before you work out to help remove some impurities. We recommend using True North Beauty’s Solid Cleanser before a workout.
There you have it- a few great reasons to get out and get moving! What are some of your favorite ways to exercise? Mine is swimming at the Y and taking my dogs for a walk on the trails near my house in Milo! Leave a comment below and tell me your favorite place to exercise and what your favorite workout are!
Remember, even if you don’t do a full gym session or only go for a 15 minute walk during your lunch break and another walk after dinner, something is better than nothing! You should aim for 30 minutes of activity a day to keep your body and skin healthy. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen if you’re exercising outside! Now, go get your sweat on!
